What to look for when buying a Craigslist used car

Craigslist has a large selection of used cars available for sale. Check out these important points when you buy a used automobile – extra resources!

1. Exterior

First, you need to look at the exterior. No panel should have rust or dents. Rust can be a serious problem. Small scratches, however, are less of a concern. It is also important to check the rocker panels, wheel wells, and fender wells. Open and close the trunk, all doors and the roof.

2. Engine

The engine should be checked when it’s cool. It is not uncommon to find some dust or debris. Oil spilled under or around your car can be a sign of a serious problem. Also check for a damaged battery and any loose wires.

3. Tires, wheels and other accessories

Tire tread should show equal wear on both sides of a vehicle. The exterior wear could indicate that the vehicle has been driven hard. The spare wheel should also be in excellent condition.

4. Windshield

Look for any cracks in the windows or windshield. Although a small crack may not appear to be a problem, it can help you negotiate the price. Keep in mind, cracks in any glass can become more severe over time. This could lead to a costly future repair.

5. Oil Filter Dipstick

The oil should be checked in addition to the fluids. It should be dark brown. If you see water or oil in the dipstick which looks like foam or gray, this could indicate that there is a possible crack in your engine. Metal bits on the rag can indicate serious problems.

6. Interior

The interior of the Craigslist-used car should be checked for musty odors. This could indicate water leaks. The seats’ upholstery shouldn’t have any tears. The pedal rubber should also look good. The roof should not droop, and the sunroof of the car should function properly.

7. Safety Features

Before buying a vehicle, make sure the safety equipment, such as turn signals and the headlights are working properly. Test the antilock braking system if it is installed. The muffler is in good working order and the horn should also work.

8. Electrical Components

Many vehicles feature several electronic devices. Automatic door locks, window functions and other electronic items should all work. The stereo should also be working properly. Check any additional features that are electrical, like the keyless ignition or alarm.

9. Manufacturer’s emblem

The emblem of the manufacturer is normally located on driver’s side door. The vehicle must not have any signs of tampering. The VIN, along with the date when the vehicle was made, should be readable.

10. Heater and AC

The engine needs to be warmed up in order to perform a proper inspection of the heater and the air conditioner. When you turn on your A/C it should start instantly. Repairs can be expensive if the unit appears to be broken. Turn on the fan in all settings to test the heating. If you notice that the air coming out of your heater is moist it is possible that a core has a hole.
